05. stage at 06/23/2011 from Ludlow, CA to Amboy, CA (day: 28,3miles / overall.: 221.2miles)
Today it was the first stage completely in dessert. But there was not a big difference compared to the previous day. When we started at 5:30am it was more or less cool. It changed as soon the sun came up. After we did about 5 kilometers we entered an US-Base. There was only the way through the base or on the highway. Yesterday Laure had talked to the responsible of the base. She was worried we all had to go through the base together. The supporters had to go around the base for sure. But the head of the base was quiet open minded. He also ordered two soldiers to support us with water. When we arrived at the gate police cars where waiting. They joined us the three kilometers through the base. While I was moving on quiet fast at the beginning, I had to slow down at the second half of the race. I got defiantly to less sleep the night before. When Patrick and James caught me up again I went on with James for a couple of miles. When I had my next big cooling break he went on. Not much later Italo arrived. I went on with him till the end of the stage. He did not stop to stay with me and support me with his water sprayer. With a lot of ice under our sun head we also arrived. There was not much to see today. Besides the road there was the highway and the railroad. Both went through the gravel and spare covered region. At the end the stones turned to be black. Italo explained me during our drive back to the motel that it was from a volcano. When we drove back to Ludlow we can see the rest of the runners. At Amboy there was only the gas station and a café. Because of that we had to sleep twice in Ludlow. When we arrived there our supplies was placed in front of the doors. It was drinks for the next five days. At the evening Xochitl came over to see us. At the beginning she also planed to run the race, but she could not afford it.
