Deutschlandlauf 1200 km in 17 stages from Kap Arkona-Rügen to Lörrach, Germany (09/12-09/28/2005)

On Friday evening at 9pm we took the night train from Hagen to Stralsund. Stralsund – that’s right! The meeting point for the Deutschlandlauf 2005 was not at Kap Arkona. It was in Stralsund. There the sports hall was big enough to provide room for 67 runners, supporters and helpers. After Karlheinz Kobus, Jörg Maisenbacher, my mother and I arrived at 9:45am at the train station. We took the bus to the sports hall. Already there the first runners passed our way. At the hall we first made our mattress bed ready. Now we went to the registration. After this we had time, because the first meeting was at 3pm. We used the time to relax, talking to other runners, having a coffee and the first meal. Against us the supporters had to take a crash course how to build up a tent. The tents should be a shield against rain at the aid stations.

At 3pm we started our way to the Hanse Dom hotel. There was the greeting, a small break and then dinner. First Ingo Schulz, the organizer of the Deutschlandlauf, introduced his team. It consists of Helmut Schieke, which is organizing with Ingos wife the shopping, Sebastian Seyrich, which is responsible for time measurement and the homepage, Joachim Barthelmann, which is marking the way, 25-30 supporters and and of course his two sons. Also there was an athlete council. It should help and advice at critical questions and situations. In there Ingo Schulz, Joachim Barthelmann, Simone Stegmeier, Günter Böhnke and Willem Mütze. At this context he thanked also the sponsors for their support. Some of them are employer of runners. After this he gave the word to the head of the city and a representative of the main sponsor, the Hypo Vereinsbank. After they finished their speech he introduced the oldest female runner Sigrid Eichner (64), the oldest male runner Dr. Bodo Fendler (69), youngest female runner Sylvia Rhen (34) and the youngest male runner, which was me, Rainer Koch, (24). The rest of the time he used to bring up some special concerns about the regulations and the organization. When he was finished we went out to enjoy our break at the Fourier till the dinner was finish. After a good and plentiful dinner went back to the sports hall and went to bed. The last night, before the DL 05 started.

At 4:30am the first people got up. The big advantage of a mass accommodation, that it is not possible oversleep the start. After we did the last preparations, packed our luggage and had breakfast we were brought by bus to Kap Arkona at island Rügen. The bus should leave at 7am, but it was already 7:15 when he arrived. When we arrived at Kap Arkona, we walked the rest of the way up to the lighthouse. Then there were the last photo shootings before the race started. At 9:15am, after Ingo and the head of Kap Arkona had their speech, we started. A short loop around the meadow of the lighthouse, give audience and press the chance to make some photos and then direction Lörrach. In 17 days we will arrive there. 67 runners, there from 10 female runners, were starting to make the 1200 km to Lörrach. The stage today should bring us the first 59 km down to Lörrach. There was optimal weather, six aid stations and one ferry which waited for the runners. The first 10 km were parallel to the nice Ostsee. It was possible to admire the beach and the bold cliffs. But as longer we ran, as more boring the course got. At the ferry, which was at 21 km, the most of the runners lost nearly no time. Time we lost there would not be credit. At the ferry René Stroßney, Jan Nabuurs and I were together the last time for today. After the ferry I ran the last way by myself. The last 10 km were the worst. The way was along a federal highway. So people had to be very careful, that they do not collide with a truck or a hiding a mirror of a passing car. At the finish I waited till René and Jan finished. Now were brought to the sports hall, where we stayed at night. When we arrived there, there were plenty of young physiotherapists which waited for us. They belong to the vocational school of this area. After a nice, hot shower and a good massage we went to a short shopping tour. At 6pm there was dinner at a hall next to ours. We had to split up at small groups, because there was not enough room. After the dinner we made some preparations for the next day, before we went to bed. So the first racing day ended.

From the second stage on, there was a grouped start. With this Ingo tries keeping the field of runners together. The start was not at the accommodation, so the runners had brought by bus to the start. Because Ingo would not take two busses only the first ten runners started at the second group. So it was possible to shuttle the second group by car. The course was still flat. There were many avenues, so there was plenty of shadow. The weather was nice and sunny with 68 F (20°C). The last kilometers were as the day before the worst. As yesterday we ran in the end at a federal highway to Stavenhagen. At this evening we had to adieu the first runner. The oldest runner, Dr. Bodo Fendler, break the second time the time limit. At the first day he told Ingo, that he had heavy stomach problems and that they should be away at the next day. Unfortunately it was not the case and today he broke the time out enormously.

The third stage should be the longest of this race. The 94 km should bring the first runners to surrender. When we started at 7am there was already a breeze. And why should it be different – it came from the front. As longer we were running, as stronger the wind got. At the end of this stage there was a ridge. There the wind blew us the sand of the surrounding fields into the face. But must of the runners were lucky, because of the wind the broadcasted rain stayed off. Only at the end of the day there was a bit of drizzle. If the weather became even worse, so the landscape became even more beautiful. The course today was more at side-streets or at bikeways which was next to the street. We passed idyllic lakes and had the first surface irregularities. About 5 km before we reached the finish of this stage, Pritzwalk, there was old man. He was from a local running club and was keeping me company till Pritzwalk. But that was not everything yet. There were waiting some pupils and her teacher at the boarder of the city to accompany. At the market place, where the finish was, were many spectators waiting for me and my campaigner. The spectators had grouped, were drinking free beer and awaiting the runners. Under the spectators, the head of the city and the minister of the interior of Brandenburg. Also there was a television team present. While a free coworker of Sat1 took company during the first two days, it was RBB a television transmitter of Brandenburg which was filming us today. After some interviews and small talks with the representatives I received a first place trophy. It was given by the head of the city to the first of this stage. After this I went to the accommodation. After refreshing myself I went the 500m to the market place. There I can watch how the rest of the runners were finishing and welcome them. Today Siegrid Eichner, Ute Wollenberg, the Italian runner Paolo Venturini and the French Bernhard Roy got out of the race.

At the fourth stage it should be rainy and windy. Thanks god, we remain spared from the rain. Against this it was getting very warm, after a quite cool morning. Well, to be honest not all of the runners arrived dry. At the afternoon it was getting cloudy and at the early evening it started to rain. The course, against the weather, was more and more pleasantly to run. It was more flat against yesterday, but there were more and more field paths and bikeways at the main roads. At the morning there were all 62 remaining runners at the starting line. But the Swiss runner Franz Schullitsch had to give up, because of stomach problems. Also Heinrich Dahmen got out of the race. There was no doubt. Most of the runners had to fight with their first problems. However it did not mean that they have to give up at such a race. Instead runners could get back to the top of the field, if they use their brain. Also Jan Nabuurs did not run the speed he ran at the beginning of the race. So after 7km I left him back already. From now on I was running by myself. René expanded his advance to Jan, which he had since yesterday. The finish of today was in Travemünde next to the river Elbe. However there was not as much publicity as the day before. But there were more and more people by car, which were making a short stop to wish us good luck. They told us, that they had seen us at the television.

Today it was the day. There were four days without rain, but the way to Schönebeck was a windy and rainy way. The hardest part was the way at the bridge over the Elbe. At noon it stopped to rain, but the sun did not brake through. Today the 9 aid stations where in an interesting distance constellation. Between the first and the second station there were just 2 km! Today it probably was the last flat stage. It had many field paths, but the most runners did not very welcome this at this weather conditions. The cobblestone street brought up much more unpopularity. At Schönebeck there was a shuttle, which brought us to the accommodation. It was around 2,5km away. Also today four runners, Gerhard Albert, Thomas Wenning, Christof Hirschel and Thomas Fischer, got out of the race.

Over night two more runners decided to get out of the race. Jörg Maisenbacher and Jürgen Schoch did not stay at the start line to Eisleben. As we were informed yesterday there were some important changes after kilometer 40 at the course. So the course description did not fit anymore. Joachim Barthelmann guess, that the course was getting shorter. The police had ordered a cut over a field path. As it turn out it was a big delusion. In the end the course was around 3 km longer. Apart from this, the god of weather was well disposed. Although there was a light, cool breeze it was dry and sunny. What borders people more than the length of the course, was the starting hilly landscape. There was no doubt, that we came closer to the Thüringer Wald. As a small donation we got much more outlooks. Especially at the last aid station the view over Eisleben. At the city of Martin Luther, Eisleben, there was a big public festival, the “Wiese”. Because of this the course was changed and again a little bit longer. Today three more runners said good bye. Edgar Kluge, Manuel Fischer and Simone Stegmeier got out of the race.

At the stage to Sömmerda – Frohndorf there were two more runners got out of the race. Cor Westhuis and Albert Werner had to strong injuries to keep on going. Today we passed the first hill of the Thüringer Wald. It was just a little hill, but at a nice wood path to cross it. That the stages was getting again longer, as it was listed at the road book, need not been mentioned anymore. Even for us, the second group which started at 7am, it was very cold. A small, inner heart heating up was given to us by some runners of a local running club. They accompanied us at the first kilometers. A few kilometers before the finish waited some more runners from Sömmerda. They accompanied us to Frohndorf. Arrived there we were welcome by a DJ, which was sponsored by the head of the city. Last but not least, there was more then enough food at the evening and the morning. So there haven not been ordered more.

Because it was getting colder and colder at the morning, it was necessary to dress long cloth at the eighth stage. At least, for the first kilometers. At the first aid station they managed it to have warm tea. Already at the beginning of the race it was mentioned, that the finish of this stage was not in Illmenau. It was in Illmenau – Manebach, which was 5 km later. Therefore the following day should be 5 km shorter. But that was again an illusion. One could say that it was normal to add 2-3 km every day. Apart from this it was a very important day. At Reinsfeld, which was 10km before Illmenau, we had Bergfest. That is what we ultra runner called the half way a stage race. So 600 km were done. But not all reached this point. Six more runners had to give up before. Eberhard Bergner, Joachim Hauser, Jens Vieler, Ruth Jäger, Rosemarie von Kocemba and Angela Ngamkam could not enjoy this moment as a runner. Whereas Angela and Rosemarie were taken out by Ingo, the organizer, and stopped no voluntary. Without doubt the stages became more and more hilly. It was possible to see the “mountains” which had to been done at the next days. There where more and more beautiful views. Already at the morning we had a wonderful sunrise at a fogged landscape. It was really gorgeous to see the fog between the hills lying on the fields. It seems to be a veil which was hanging on an invisible robe and hides something. Also the view down to Illmenau, which was surrounded by hills, was an enjoyment. At the last kilometers Sylvia Renz accommodated. The top marathon runner and physiotherapist accompanied me the rest of the way. From today on she was helping Joachim to mark the course, as well as massage the runners at the evening. At this evening the local voluntary fire department was organizing a campfire. But least of the runners were able to see it. Most of them tried to get some sleep.

The ninth stage brought us closer to my homeland. After we ran uphill for the first ten kilometers, we had a beautiful view over the Thüringer Wald and the foothills of the Rhön. Wherever you look there was mountain scenery. Also the weather added his part. Even if it was clashing chilly, there was sun coming up and it was getting a nice day in late summer. Further on build up, that the stage was very short. So there was plenty of time to recover afterwards. Stephanie Ehret did not have this enjoyment, because she was not lined up at the start this morning. Today there was only one more which got out of the race. Albrecht Mayer say goodbye to the rest of the runners. Arrived at the Franconian city Trappstadt, we were welcome by the elementary school. After some autographs runners could relax at a hot shower. The sports pub offered coffee, cake and hot sausage. At the evening there was a “typical” Bavarian food served. And after this the head of the city welcomed us. The local band was playing Bavarian music quiet a time to entertain the runners.

The tenth stage was again a bouncer stage. It should be 80 km, but because the ferry did not drive there were 2-3km more via Volkach. The course continued a few more kilometers at the Hassberge, before we entered the Main region. The hills were not as high anymore, but it was a steady up and down. At the third aid station at Hofheim, a town next to Hasfurth, Hubert Karl was waiting for us. The ultra runner took one day of, to accompany us a part of the way. What build us up there, were destroyed at the next aid station. This was not placed where it should. Because the supporter did not find the place, they placed four kilometers later. Eleven kilometers were getting fifteen kilometers, and this without the knowledge of anybody. But most of the runners get over this. At the morning it was warmer, than the two days before, but also at noon when most of the runners still was out at the course. Nevertheless three more runners got out of the race. Marianne Dahl, Hartmud Feldmann and my team college Walther Zimmermann got out. So only two, out of ten women remained at the race. At Prosselsheim, which was the today’s finish, we was welcome from Martina Hausmann, the head of our club Christoph Hofmann, my father, my sister, her best girl friend and some other local acquaintances. It was obviously, I was at my home region. Beyond the local band was playing music for us at the evening. Also the food tonight was much better. Beside pasta there was a variation of salad. The only disadvantage, that there was to less room for all the people. The hall was excessively overcrowded and therefore some of the runners went to a pension.

The 11th stage should be the last long stage of the race. The weather was like the days before sunny and warm. Maybe it would not change until we arrive at Lörrach. Out from the Main valley we went into the lovely Tauber valley till Assamstadt. We left the Bavarian region and came into the region of Baden Württemberg. The landscape was like the following days beautiful and idyllic. But the information about the length was of course daring. The guesses of René and me was at around 90km. Also the rest of the runners were complaining about the length. Just the distance between Wachbach and Hachelt, which were noted with 0.8 km. It took us 16 minutes to do it. The street sign then told us that it was 3 km. After I twisted my ankle yesterday a bit, I would not risk anything. I was running slowly, so that it was possible that René, Hans-Jürgen, Theo and I finished together. Against us Theo was starting one hour earlier. The nice thing, that none had to get out of the race today.

Starting today the stages was getting clearly shorter. The course to Heilbronn-Biberach was just rare 70 km. We left the Tauber valley, were crossing the Jagst valley up till Neckarsulm. Even today nice outlooks were not rare. But the driver where getting more unfriendly as more we got into the Swabians region. Some of the runners even got a short meeting with the police. They want to keep away the runners from street and rerouted them onto a field. At the finish there was waiting a big buffet of cakes for all runners at Biberach. The girl friend of Karlheinz Kobus and his sister brought them.

The way to Renningen-Malmsheim, which was the finish of the 13th stage, brought us deeper at the Black forest. Also here the drivers were not very happy about us. However we were not welcome so many times with giving the finger as the days before. A bigger problem for some of the 6 am runners was a mistake at the marking. Joachim’s helper, Silvia, marked some meters at the wrong way. Because she saw a red sign and interpreted it as one of the markings. The result, some runners lost up till 15 minutes. As a sign of her sorry she bought some chocolate for the runners. The pleasant part, that there were again some ultra runners waiting at the course. Also at the finish we were welcome heartily. And there was a buffet of cakes again. But that was not all. The dinner was the best what we had up till now. Sadly I was not able to enjoy this assortment, because I had stomach problems since kilometer 56. Not I alone had stomach problems. Herman Böhm had to get out of the race 10km before the finish. They brought him to the hall, because his circulation broke down.

The 14th day was the most critical day for me. When I got up at the morning my circulation was so bad, because of the stomach problem. I thought I could not start. Jan, our ambulance man, Schek Kee, René, Shakal and mainly Angela encouraged me and twisted my mind to start. So I started slowly. The first five kilometers I was walking very slowly, before we started to jog slowly. It was a stage I was running very slowly, but I was still at the race. The good thing, that Shakal stayed with me all the time. But that was not the only good thing for today. Today we were passing the 1000 kilometer point. Shortly after this there was the second aid station. There cake, sparkling wine and some other good things waited for us. In addition to that highlight we arrived at the hometown of Ingo Schulz, the organizer, at Horb. This weekend was an open day event. Because of this we finished at the industry park with publicity. Thence there was a shuttle taxi to the accommodation at the city. Unfortunately there was only one shower at the hall. But it was possible to take another shuttle to the bath and shower there. The dinner was organized today very well, too. Moreover there was a local band playing some music.

The third from last stage brought us deep into the Black forest. Sadly it was the first cloudy day after the raining day in the beginning. When we saw the altitude profile the day before, we were shocked. But as it showed up, it was not as bad as it seemed. Beside gigantic outlooks there was a lot to laugh about. The village names (Siedichfür, Hexenloch) where just funny. The finish was at the market place at St. Georgen. A few hundred meters away, our accommodation. But much more interesting was the shopping centre, the kebab and the ice bar. After we had a meeting with the major, there was dinner at an Asia restaurant. It was unusual, but very good.

The second last stage brought us into the heart of the Black forest, the Feldberg. Finish was today in Altglashütten a suburb of Feldberg. At this stage we were able to enjoy the outcasts and the hilly landscape of the Black forest to the full. Today was the shortest of all stages. Therefore the last kilometers were just uphill till the end. Today René took the buck with the stomach problems. So everyone had to handle this problem. Because the results at the top places already are written, I preferred it to cure my injury at the angle, I ran together with René slowly. Most of the runners already cured their injuries and smelled the finish in Lörrach. It was obviously, because the running times were getting shorter. The only bad thing, that the weather still was cloudy and did not changed. At the evening Ingo took the time thank all the supporters and helpers. Furthermore he said some words about the program of the following day.

Today was the day! The day of the last stage. Because the distances between the runners should not be too big and the first placed should finish first, there were three start groups. The very slow started at 6:30am. The quicker runners started at 7:30am and the fast runners at 8:00am. According to Ingo it should be the nicest day of the whole race – and it was like he said! Against the other days we did not run a lot at streets. The first 4 km were uphill. Most of them were trails. From there on the next 20 km were just trails. We were passing a beautiful waterfall, down into the valley. The rest of the time the course was at bikeways. Even the weather was cloudy, the outcasts were fantastic. It was an enjoyment along the meadow, a small stream, crossing the valley and looking to the hills. The finish in Lörrach was at the market place, next to the Hypo Vereinsbank. René and I were finishing together. Today we speeded up from beginning on, that we were finishing first. Sylvia accompanied us some time. For her, it was the first course which was longer than a Marathon. At the finish there were pretzels with butter, cake and drinks sponsored by the city of Lörrach. The shuttle of the fire department brought us to the accommodation, which was 1.5km away.

The finisher party was planed for 6pm, afterwards should be dinner. At the beginning of this ceremonial moment, Ingo was having a short speech. He thanked all the supporters and helpers without the race would not be possible. He was glad; the aid stations organized the work self and he did not have to do the work. Also he was glad, that Helmut and Ingo’s wife did the shopping and the food. That Joachim marked the so well and that Sebastian updated the homepage all the time. The homepage was complimented many times during the race. But all over he was glad, that 37 runners finished. 35 men and 2 women did it. That was more than 55%, which is a good result for a multi stage race. He highlighted, that normally only 50% finishing. The rest were failing because of mental problems, Achilles tendon ignition, Shint splints (periosteum irritation), blisters or stomach problems. After he finished the head of the city and a local branch leader of the Hypo Vereinsbank welcomed and congratulated us. Now all finishers were celebrated. Before we got dinner all runners with aborted the race and all helpers were getting a small present.

At the next morning all, which did not left up till now, met a last time to breakfast together. After this everyone started to go his one ways again.
