When we packed our stuff this morning Laure came to me. It was because of Markus. He had arrived yesterday two hours above the time limit. Laure had talked to his team. All had the same opinion. They want to let him start again. But what do all other runners think about that? She asked me to talk to them, if everybody agreed with this decision. But we runner got the same opinion. Everyone knows that he can have a bad day. And nobody should be dropped out cause of it. After we had told Markus the good news we could start the prerace meeting. Laure did not have much to say. She just mentioned that we should be very careful. At the roads through the mountain there is no side line and very less possibilities to avoid. She thinks the stage will be very hard, but very beautiful as well.

Just a few kilometers after the start we went on a bridge. The Bridge was above the Colorado River. It was the natural boarder between California and Arizona. The first State was done. Some more kilometers through the valley and then we went on our well known Route 66. Now it was a steadily uphill for the next 30 kilometers. When we had about half way, we were in middle of rock covered mountains. There was a small old fashion village called Oatman. Laure had already mentioned it. The houses where done in wild west style and on the roads the donkeys walked around. You felt like you where put back in time. After I took already a lot of time for making pictures and enjoying the countryside I went to the Saloon. There I had a good ice cream. Then I went on in fast walking through the village. When we had passed the village it was still uphill through the mountains. There where beautiful views and you just waited for the next passing American Indian on his horse. When we continued to reach the Sitgreaves Pass (1086m) we passed an old gold mine. So everything was there, which belongs to a good old western movie, without the American Indians. And for sure there was no one coming. When we arrived at the pass I took the chance to go on the platform to do some more pictures and enjoy one more time the landscape. Then it was going downhill for the next 15 kilometers. It was fun to run down. Sadly we had to be patient and do slowly. It makes no sense to risk shin splints and the whole race for this downhill feeling. Already while downhill running you can see some houses at the other side of the valley. And that was the way to go. So we had to do another uphill for 15 kilometers. In my opinion it was the most beautiful stage up till now. But I can imagine that some are not as happy, when they did the uphill. Well, that had to be done as well.

Already during running I heard that Gérard Bavato went to the hospital and then back on the course. He had problems with blisters and was afraid he gets and infection. When I was sitting at the finishing line at the Motel 6 in Kingman he arrived with his support team. Sadly another drop out on our way to New York.
