12. stage at 06/30/2011 from Ash Fork, AZ to Williams, AZ, (day: 30.3miles / overall.: 501.3miles)

AT the prestage meeting Laure introduced a visitor from France. She planed to write a report about the TransAm. After the introducing, Laure mentioned the trail of this stage. She told all supporters to drive slowly. Otherwise too much dust will be dispersed. She told us to pay attention. Normally there is only one main trail, but there are a few corners which can be tricky. To be sure there will be a marking with arrows and bands.

In Ash Fork we went back on Route 66. After about 15 kilometers the road cover changed. The asphalt road turned into a gravel path. But it still was called a road with signs and mileage of the road. So it should be possible to find the way with the road signs as well. Our stage was mainly uphill till we reached 2100m altitudes. We had to do about 600m uphill, but there was also a bit downhill. Our highest point was at Holden Lake at 2134m altitudes. At the beginning of the stage it was very cool and no wind. If there was no uphill you almost needed a jacket. Even the temperatures rise it was much cooler than a few days before. Meantime there was also shadow. The bushes turned into needle trees. We passed the Kaibab Forrest Park. When we arrived in Williams it was not possible to check in at the motel at that time. The rooms were not finished yet. Because June and I wanted to visit the Grand Canyon anyway, we just left for that. Williams was the last big city before the Grand Canyon. It was still about 100km. So it took about 1.25 hour of driving. Because it was a short stage and we had a short stay at the finish we had a lot of time to enjoy the wonder of the nature. Besides that we also did a year around walk of the IVV.
